Chapter 5: Integrated Teaching Methodology: The Role of the Teacher and AI-Assisted Personalization in Higher Education
Synopsis
The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education demands an urgent redefinition of the teacher’s role, shifting it from a transmitter of content to a facilitator of skills and values for the 21st century. This chapter proposes an Integrated Teaching Methodology (ITM) that harnesses AI’s potential to provide personalized and adaptive learning. The ITM combines the principles of active methodologies, such as Project-Based Learning, with data analytics from Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS). The chapter describes the diagnosis of the need to update teaching practices in light of the ubiquitous availability of information enabled by generative tools. It details key didactic strategies, including the “Augmented Debate,” and projects expected outcomes in improving academic performance, fostering critical thinking, and enhancing student autonomy. The implementation of this proposal seeks to transform the classroom into an intelligent, relevant, and equitable environment for higher education.
